Event 7: $2,700 Spring Poker Championship
Day 1b Completed
The second flight for the 2014 Borgata Spring Poker Open Championship concluded with 142 players joining the 57 from the first flight to return tomorrow at noon for Day 2. The chip leader at the end of the day, and for the tournament thus far, is Alan Wentz who won a massive pot against past World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open winner Anthony Zinno to surge into the chip lead. Wentz finished the day with an impressive 239,500 in chips which is 32,900 more than what Day 1a chip leader Paul Volpe finished with.
Wentz is a virtual unknown with only one listed live cash for $32,724. That was only a month ago so he could be on to the start of something great with a deep run here.
There were plenty of players taking part in the action today as 299 entrants took part. Joining Wentz at the top of the leader board are Andy Spears (205,400), Kevin Grabel (168,000), Matt Giannetti (165,600), Daniel Buzgon (138,400), Mike Leah (103,800), and Brett Richey (101,800). Buzgon won a big pot off of Tony Dunst to eliminate the WPT commentator and build himself a top stack.
Other notables that will return for Day 2 include Brian Lemke, Andy Frankenberger, Darren Elias, David Tuthill, Corrie Wunstel, Amnon Filippi, Adam Friedman, Matt Affleck, and a short stacked Melanie Weisner who opted to forfeit her Day 1a stack and try again. She would get off to a hot start but would falter at the end of the day to end with just 20,000 in chips.
For all those that made it through, there were as many that would go home disappointed including the likes of Men Nguyen, James Woods, Jamie Kerstetter, Cherish Andrews, and Allen Kessler.
The total prize pool for the tournament just met the $1 million guarantee with it reaching $1,003,950. First place will take home $256,508. Tomorrow players will play another 8 levels and play will start at noon local time. PokerNews will be back here from the start to bring you all the exciting flops, turns, and rivers.
Here's a slew of chip counts grabbed off of the player bags. We'll have full chip counts and seating assignments for Day 2 as soon as they become available. 142 players survived today according to Tab Duchateau making it a total of 199 that will return tomorrow.

The board showed and there was a 7,000 bet in front of the player in the cutoff and a call of that bet from the small blind. Tyler Patterson put out that 7,000 bet plus an additional 20,000, leaving himself with approximately 30,000 behind.
The original bettor thought for about 45 seconds before moving all in. The player in the small blind quickly folded and it was back on Patterson.
"Uuuhhhh," he groaned. "I have a good hand."
His opponent sat there, stoic, eyes slightly fluttering - careful not to my eye contact with Patterson.
Patterson looked unsure of himself, resting his head on his right hand while letting out a big exhale. His head leaned back and he looked up at the ceiling. He hooked his finger inside of his mouth and then began rubbing his lips.
Finally a fold and his opponent mucks his hand as table mate Amnon Filippi mutters "Wow".

All the money went in with the board showing and Anthony Zinno was in great shape to double up with his . He would have to fade a club though as Alan Wentz had .
It wasn't Zinno's day as the river was the to give Wentz the pot and send Zinno to the rail empty handed. Wentz is up to 225,000 after taking that pot down.

With the board showing , Dan Buzgon check-called an 8,100 bet from Tony Dunst. The river paired the board with the .
Buzgon checked again. Dunst sat there in thought, and announced all in. He was met instantly with Buzgon putting his chips in the middle while turning over for a flopped set that turned into a full house on the river.
Dunst, ever the gentleman, mucked his hand, stood up and said "Good luck guys" as he started to head out of the room.

Brian Lemke had re-raised his opponent who after thinking things through announced he was all in. Lemke snap-called, turning over . "I almost folded," said his opponent as he turned over .
The flop came giving Lemke a set of Aces. The turn actually helped his opponent as it was the meaning any ten would make a straight. The river was the , however, and Lemke had his foe covered slightly to send him to the rail.
